Waka Spargo, Person Centred Carer
The skills our teams at SwanCare bring are definitely part of the secret to our success. We rely on our people to always go above and beyond for both our team and our residents. Meet Waka Spargo. Since joining SwanCare in 2008, she has never stopped learning and has always been ready to take on a new challenge. She’s a much loved member of our Waminda team who truly loves what she does each day.
After moving to Perth from Zambia, Waka found the role that was right for her and hasn’t looked back since. She never expected to find a work environment like SwanCare but is so glad she did.
“First and foremost, I was looking for a job but when I found SwanCare I knew it was special and so much more than ‘just a job’. As soon as I joined I knew I’d made the right choice. It’s been 10 years and I have never had a reason to leave. It’s such a nice place.”
While Waka is a Person Centred Carer, she wears many different hats! In her time with us, she has worked as an Activities Assistant and today she also works on reception and manages rostering.
“I’ve always had an interest in exploring other roles. You could say I know everything in every corner! I have been exposed to different departments and have a good understanding of anything people ask me about. I really love helping people with my knowledge of SwanCare and I’m grateful for the opportunities I’ve been given to try new things.”
When Waka comes to work, her focus is always on helping people. As a carer she supports people in any way possible to help them live their everyday life. Whether that’s helping someone to shower, dress or eat, she’s always thinking about how she can improve someone’s day. It’s the residents who put a smile on her face. The reward she feels when they are happy is a reward like no other.
“Every time I’m working with people, I think about my parents. If they were at SwanCare I would want them to receive the best care and support possible. That’s why I do what I do and that’s why I choose to stay at SwanCare; to be part of a care provider I’m proud of.”
As someone who likes to keep busy, it’s really important to Waka that she’s part of a workplace where something is always happening and where there is plenty of opportunity. This is something she has always found at SwanCare!
“I love that we have the Feathers Rewards Program so we can celebrate our people. We also have a lot of training that happens in each department. I’ve been here for 10 years now and I know I’ll be here for another 10 years! I’m sure in that time I’ll have opportunities to try many new and different things, possibly even a different position again!”
Above all, it’s the unbeatable work environment that the team and residents create that keep Waka walking into work with a smile. We love seeing her at Waminda and so do our residents.
“I think to work at SwanCare you have to be a happy person. It’s so important for our residents you smile and embrace challenges. People are so supportive and there really are endless opportunities. If I was to leave SwanCare, I’d have to try and find a workplace that’s better or the same and I really don’t think that is possible. It is hard to beat this place. I can’t fault SwanCare!”
