Are you thinking about transforming your outdoor space into a lush, thriving garden but feeling overwhelmed about where to begin? The Gardens Interest Group is here to guide you on your gardening journey! With spring just around the corner, now’s the perfect time to join them.
What started as a discussion among neighbours with a shared a passion for gardening and a collective desire to improve SwanCare’s gardens, eventually led to the formation of the Gardens Interest Group in September 2013. At first, it was a simple exchange of their gardening knowledge and assistance to other residents who were unwell or less able to maintain their gardens. Recognising the importance of the gardens for all residents, the group started meeting with maintenance staff, management and onsite gardeners monthly. These meetings aim to address gardens across the campus, identifying the areas that need attention, and help plan for new plantings. The group members lend their expertise in recommending suitable plants, ensuring that what is planted will thrive. Today, they meet at the Swan Centre on the third Sunday of each month, discussing a different gardening topic at each gathering and welcoming all interested attendees.
The Gardens Interest Group now has a committee of six members: Ellen C., Noelene B., Lesley F., Jenni L., Thelma C. and Trevor B. They organise the topics for the monthly meetings and any guest speakers, with attendees upskilled across a wide variety of subjects. Some past topics have included soil health, plant care, propagation methods, succulents, pests and insects, drought-resistant plants, fertilisers, soil conditioners, and a range of gardening techniques. Some residents share their experiences of visiting gardens around the world and discuss different gardening styles, while other sessions are led by expert speakers covering a diverse range of topics. Residents are also encouraged to propose new gardening topics or themes they would like to explore in future discussions.
“Everyone is welcome to join us, male or female, expert or novice. Bring your curiosity and questions. Our group is open, friendly and provides a great learning experience. Share what you know, question what you don’t and connect with a community over a shared passion,” invites Noelene. You’re welcome to drop by and ask questions, even if the topic isn't directly related to the meeting agenda. The group welcomes sharing advice and support for any plant problems attendees may be facing.
Whether you're a seasoned gardener or just starting out, everyone is welcome to join this friendly gathering on the third Sunday of each month, where you can enjoy a relaxing chat over some afternoon tea, generously provided by the committee. Come for the conversation, stay for the community, and maybe even pick up a few gardening tips along the way.
